Oakland Raider owner Al Davis who is 202 years old spent over $180 million in free agency this year in hopes to bring a super bowl victory back to Oakland. Let’s review all the new deals Mr. Davis signed, sealed, and delivered.
Javon Walker: 6 years, $55 million with $16 million guaranteed. Walker, 29, is still a young player, but has been plagued with injuries. The former first round pick only played in about half the games for the Broncos last year because of an on-going knee injury. Moreover, after game one of the 2005 season, Walker injured his ACL and missed the rest of the season after being placed on injured reserve. Knee injuries = bad in the NFL. Javon is milk.
Ron Burgundy’s thoughts: “Javon Walker was a bad choice.”
Tommy Kelly: Re-signed for 7 years, $50.5 million with $18.125 guaranteed. Another young player with knee problems. Kelly, 27, was undrafted out of Mississippi State and suffered a season ending ACL tear in week 7 last year. Kelly is very versatile and is scheduled to replace the retired Warren Sapp, but a D-Tackle with 13 career sacks with serious knee problems is not worth this money. Tommy is milk.
Ron Burgundy’s thoughts: Tommy Kelly was a bad choice.”
DeAngelo Hall: Traded for, then signed for 7 years, $66 million with $24.55 guaranteed. Hall is 24 year and a former first round pick (8). This guy is a douche. Last year against the Saints he carried a poster of dog killer Michael Vick on the field to show his support for his jail bird friend. He was fined 10K for that stupid act. In 2005, Hall held up a sign that read, “Aloha, see you in Hawaii,” after an interception on Monday Night Football to stake his claim as a Pro Bowl player. Basically, this kid won’t shut up and does stupid things. He has great upside and is one of the best corners in the league with kick return capabilities, but when the Raiders start off winless in their first five games we will definitely hear some noise of stupidness coming from this annoying turd.
Ron Burgundy’s thoughts: “DeAngelo Hall was a bad choice.”
Micah’s Note: I think DeAngelo is completely overrated as a cornerback and not worth any of what Davis gave up for him. He also had sixty-some yards on three consecutive penalties in a game last year. Personal foul type stuff. Way to keep it together.
Justin Fargas: Re-signed for 3 years, $14 million with $6 million guaranteed. With reports surfacing the Raiders might be drafting a running back this year and with them still having Lamont Jordan, Dominic Rhodes, and Michael Bush on the team, OTR thinks this is great. It’s important for a team to tie up lots of money in one position without one of those players being good. Lamont signed a five-year $27.5 million deal in ‘05, Rhodes signed a two-year $7.5 million deal in ‘07, and Bush has some rookie deal. Rhodes likes to drink and drive, and was suspended for four games last year for a substance abuse violation. Bush hasn’t played yet, because he recovered from a broken leg all last year that he suffered in college. Let’s look at this running back core and see what Burgundy thinks.
Ron Burgundy’s thoughts: “Assembling these running backs was a bad choice.”
Gibril Wilson: 6 years, $39 million with $16 million guaranteed. Might as well keep it going, right? Where is all this money coming from? I don’t know, Gibril might be a good player. Half of me thinks we only know who this guy is because he played for the Super Bowl champions and the other half of me thinks Gibril is a stupid name.
Ron Burgundy’s thoughts: “Well, I could be wrong, but I believe diversity is an old, old wooden ship that was used during the Civil War era.”
Other notables signed: Nnamdi Asomugha (franchised), Drew Carter, Kalimba Edwards, Cornell Green, Kwame Harris, William Joseph, Josh Shaw, and John Wade.
OTR’s Conclusion: This team still sucks. Al Davis needs to sell the team. They are milk.
