The Philadelphia Flyers, a hockey team in the National Hockey League, shipped the rights to playoff stud R.J. Umberger to the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for the 19th overall pick and a third-round pick in last night’s draft.
It’s not that the Flyers were unhappy with his 11 goals and five assists in the playoffs, it’s just that they couldn’t fit Umberger into their salary cap structure considering they still need to re-sign Jeff Carter and Randy Jones.
They Flyers used that 19th pick on two-way Swiss defenseman Luca Sbisa.

Got something to say?

Tough, necessary move…
R.J. really developed into a player here, but the cap is designed to disperse the talent throughout the league. At least they’re sending him to a familiar location in Ohio with a familiar face in Coach Hitchcock.
Supposedly, Hitch has made it clear to RJ that there are top line minutes waiting for him in Columbus. I feel like the Flyers are making cap space for a Carter contract and perhaps a free agent defenseman splash on July 1st.
Either way, this is a better situation for RJ to develop and shine; he was an overachieving utility player in Philly that stepped up his game and surprised people.
