Malkin offered big dough to play in Russia?

June 21, 2008

jemaine.jpgAccording to a report in the Toronto Star, Penguins star Evgeni Malkin has been offered $12.5 million a year tax free to play in Russia.

The native Russian is set to make $3.8 million this year, but a new deal with the Penguins will fetch closer to the $9 million range. Not tax free.

“He could make, in Russia, if he chose to go there next year after his contract expired, double or triple what he could make here,” said Malkin’s agent JP Barry, who admitted to receiving some “back-channel” offers from Russia.

“That’s not what he’s interested in doing,” he continued. “If this was all about money he would go to Russia because he could make more in Russia than he ever could in the NHL. Evgeni’s decision is he wants to stay in Pittsburgh.”

Apparently, Malkin gets antsy when he has to wait in line for bread.
