Lebron James will become a free agent in 2010. Rumors have circulated that a New York franchise could reel him away from Cleveland, whether it’s the New York Knicks or the Brooklyn Nets. Both teams will most likely have the cap room available to sign him to a very lucrative deal.
But what if another organization could offer him two, three, maybe even four times more than those two teams? I would think Lebron has to at least entertain those offers.
Well, it could happen. According to Ian Thomsen at SI.com the Greek team Olympiakos of Athens is considering making a run at James when he becomes a free agent. Thomsen quotes, “This talk was beginning to make its way through the NBA on Friday. I heard it from a reliable league source, who told me that it emanates from Olympiakos.”
Any NBA deal that James receives will start a tad beat under $20 million per year and he can’t be offered anything more than that do to salary cap restrictions. However, the Olympiakos don’t have any restrictions. They could offer him $40 million or even $50 million per year if they opt to do so.
Furthermore, if you figure in the exchange rate and the fact that the Olympiakos would pay most of his taxes and living expenses, anyone would have a tough time turning that down. Even a King.
