My thoughts Eagles/Bears

Sept. 29, 2008

Here are my Eagles/Bears thoughts from GCobb.com. Sorry it took so long to post:

I’m not quite sure what more the Eagles’ defense could have done for the offense in the second half. This game was frustrating on a number of levels, so let’s take a look at what happened.

What I liked…

-DeSean Jackson continues to impress. Yes, he made a couple of costly errors, but remember that he’s a rookie and is already doing way more than he should have to do. Take a look at some other rookie WR’s this year. What has Devin Thomas or Malcolm Kelly done for the Redskins? Other than Eddie Royal in Denver, Jackson is at the top of his draft class in terms of production. He has to cut down on those rookie mistakes, but if you don’t see his promise, then you aren’t watching the games.

-The two keys I thought for the Eagles coming into the season were red-zone offense and turnovers on defense. I’ll get to the former in a minute as it will not be in this section. But the latter seems to have been solved. In the second half, when the game counted, the Eagles continued to hassle the Bears offense and take the ball from them. Usually, that wins games.

-I know he’s banged up, but the Eagles’ coverage units did a nice job on Devin Hester. They didn’t allow him to gash them the way he has done so many other times. And this was with the Birds kicking the ball to him somewhat conventionally.

-I’ve never thought too much about Juqua Parker, but he’s off to a great start this year. Let’s just hope he holds up to the pounding of the season.

-Bunkley and Patterson are turning into a really, really nice set of defensive tackles. As I’ve said many times before, great tackles solve a lot of problems on defense.

…and not so much

-First and goal inside the five TWICE towards the end of the game. Absolutely inexcusable.

-How many chances do you really need to make up the point differential in the second half? It’s not like the Eagles were down by 30. At most, they needed a touchdown. This offense (even without #36) is too good not to take advantage of all those opportunities.

-I praised Buckhalter last week, but I don’t know that I can do that this week. He looked hesitant and many times cut the wrong way. He didn’t have a ton of room to run, but he needs run with more authority.

-The Eagles safeties can’t cover. This is a huge issue. Brian Dawkins is getting older and can’t be asked to cover the way he used to. I like Quintin Mikell, but he’s not very good in coverage. He got burned by Marty Booker for a TD and even struggles with tight ends. Sean Considine? I won’t even mention him. If Quinton Demps can cover (clearly the fastest safety), he needs to be out there.

-No play action at the goal line to end the game? You serious? Not once?

-David Akers is just flat-out unreliable beyond 40 yards at this point and that’s a concern. If he even makes one of those two FG’s, he’s kicking a 20-yarder for the win at the end of the game. Monitor this situation as it goes on this year, because this could be his last year in Philly.

-I wish Al Michaels and John Madden would spend more time showing replays and less time pointing out Ashton Kutcher in the stands. I really, really don’t care.

-I’m still not sold on Chris Gocong in coverage. He is a converted DE. Tight ends are getting leaner and faster and I don’t see where he is equipped to be out in coverage. He has made some excellent plays up on the line, but I worry when he drops back.

-Lorenzo Booker….ehhhh. He cannot pick up the blitz to save his life. That gets QB’s killed. This is probably Brian Westbrook’s most underrated talent. Even for a little guy, he reads the blitz and sticks his nose in there.

-Wayyyy too many drops. To Matt Schobel, you should expect to get hit when you catch a ball over the middle. You have to catch that ball.

-I said this last year and who knows, maybe it’s just his demeanor. But, Reggie Brown just looks like he has no desire to be out there playing football. His facial expressions and body language don’t show a fire for the game and an eagerness to contribute.
