The Philadelphia Phillies took Game 5 on Wednesday night to take a seemingly insurmountable 4-1 lead in the World Series.
We look ahead to Game 6 where James Shields will take the mound for the Rays in Tampa.
“Teams have come back from 4-1 deficits before, we just have to take it one game at a time,” Shields told OTR. “One inning at a time really. Actually, one batter at a time. Then again, I really need to focus on one pitch at a time.”
The good news for the Rays is that the bats of Evan Longoria and Carlos Pena seem to have come alive at just the right time.
“If we can keep playing like we are capable of playing, we’ll be able to get right back in this thing,” said Pena.
On the other side, the Phillies know that they can’t get too comfortable, regardless of their lead in the Series.
“We’re going to send Brett [Myers] out there and he’ll do a great job for us,” Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said.
When asked about the possibility of blowing a 4-1 lead and what that might mean to the city, Manuel didn’t seem concerned.
“We can’t worry about that. We just need to keep working hard and everything should fall into place. I’m more concerned about Jimmy Rollins showing up on time to the game.”
The series resumes Saturday night in Tampa. There may be a local blackout as there are still 12,000 tickets unsold.
