A league source has told MLive.com that Eagles GM Tom Heckert wants “no part” of the Assistant GM job in Detroit.
When looking at it on paper, it’s easy to wonder why a guy with a GM title would want to move to another team for an Asst. GM title, but we all know that Heckert isn’t a true GM in Philly. Andy has the final say, so Heckert is pretty much an Asst. GM here too. So then, wouldn’t that just be a lateral move to a worse organization and a lesser title?
But even looking at it pragmatically, why on Earth would Heckert want to assist a guy with no General Manager experience in Martin Mayhew? Andy Reid at least has had success. You could make a strong case that Mayhew and President Tom Lewand had their fingerprints all over that debacle in Detroit. I’d be very hesitant to tie my career to that ship.
Heckert grew up in Michigan so his name will always pop up in relation to the Lions. I’m sure we’ll hear his name come up in many of the GM searches that are going on right now, but I’m not surprised to hear that he wants “no part” of the Lions.
