This is from GCobb.com. A look at the offensive side of the ball and what starters were homegrown:
As soon as I posted the article on who the Eagles drafted on defense, I immediately got emails that essentially said, “when ya lookin’ at the offense?” Some had better grammar, some had worse.
Clearly, the Eagles are not as strong on this side of the ball and that’s quite puzzling since Andy Reid is an offensive guy. The front line is interesting because they have invested a lot of picks in o-lineman, yet only three are starters. Tra Thomas was a Ray Rhodes pick. Jon Runyan was a free agent addition. I know everyone wants to point to Winston Justice and I agree, he’s probably a wasted pick at this point. But, keep in mind you can look at any team’s draft from just about any year and point out mistakes they made. So, we can’t harp on the bad picks too much, it’s just not fair.
Hitting on Donovan McNabb was key. Do you have any idea how many GM’s and head coaches have lost their jobs because a high first-round quarterback couldn’t play? Ask Mike Nolan how it went in San Francisco waiting for Alex Smith to never pan out. The 1999 QB draft class that was supposed to be 1983-esque, was actually filled with a bunch of coach killers. Daunte Culpepper was second best of the bunch and he’s not doing so hot these days. Tim Couch, Cade McNown and Akili Smith have been out of the league for a while now. And remember, the Eagles had the 2nd pick, so they had a chance to miss badly. It’s not like Donovan fell to them.
Wide receiver is just a sore spot with this regime. With the exception of DeSean Jackson, they have whiffed on receivers. Todd Pinkston was actually a nice player, despite all the criticism he received. He was better than people give him credit for. And I think we are all starting to really like Avant. Could you imagine if he was fast? Ha! He’d be All-Pro. He has all the tools but speed.
So let’s take a look at the offensive starters and how well the Eagles drafted there:
Offensive line:
-Todd Herremans: 4th round in 2005
-Jamaal Jackson: Free agent in 2003
-Shawn Andrews: 1st round in 2004
-Max Jean-Gilles: 4th round in 2006
-Nick Cole: Free agent 2006
Quarterback:
-Donovan McNabb: 1st round in 1999
-Kevin Kolb: 2nd round in 2007 (I’m listing the backups at this position too)
-AJ Feeley: 5th round in 2001
Running back:
-Brian Westbrook: 3rd round in 2002
-Correll Buckhalter: 4th round in 2001
Tight end:
-L.J. Smith: 2nd round in 2003
-Brent Celek: 5th round in 2007
Wide receiver:
-Reggie Brown: 2nd round in 2005
-Greg Lewis: Free agent in 2003
-DeSean Jackson: 2nd round in 2008
-Jason Avant: 4th round in 2006
Let me know if I missed something, made an error, or just if you think I’m missing most of my brain cells.
