Kurt Warner at 49ers Headquarters

kurtwarnerThe Associated Press is reporting:

Two-time MVP Kurt Warner is taking a physical exam and meeting with the top brass of the San Francisco 49ers, who are in hot pursuit of the free agent quarterback.

Warner led the Arizona Cardinals to the Super Bowl last season, but hasn’t re-signed with the club. NFC West rival San Francisco has no settled starting quarterback, and the 49ers seem very interested in signing the 37-year-old passer.

Warner arrived at the 49ers’ training complex shortly before lunchtime with his wife, Brenda. He’s scheduled for a typical free-agent examination, followed by a lunch meeting with general manager Scot McCloughan and coach Mike Singletary.

As per ESPN’s John Clayton, “The Cardinals, according to a source, are offering a two-year, $20 million deal to keep him in Arizona.

“Warner wants $14 million to $16 million a year.

“According to the source, the Cardinals’ offer is $10 million in 2009 with an option bonus for $10 million in 2010. There are not any guarantees in the contract, so it is effectively a one-year deal at $10 million if the Cardinals don’t want to bring him back in 2010.”

Here at OTR we always go by the “well, they are the Arizona Cardinals” philosophy.  The Larry Fitzgerald contract extension put things on hold last offseason, but with two more opportunities to screw things up this offseason (Kurt Warner and Anquan Boldin), we are highly confident that Arizona will fall back into their old ways.  So, don’t be surprised if the San Francisco 49ers somehow land Kurt Warner.
